Malmsbury Common

In 2017/18 the Malmsbury community worked with Council to prepare a master plan for the site.

The plan aims to protect and enhance the site’s natural and cultural values, while providing opportunities to increase use and enjoyment of the place by a range of users.

In 2018/19 Stage 1 of the master plan was implemented, increasing the trail network, picnic areas and seating.

Stage 2 has commenced, expanding on the trail network, broadening the reserve experience and providing all weather access for walking, nature photography, bird watching.

Malmsbury Common includes native grassland and grassy wetland plant communities.

To maintain the health of these environments, ecological burning is undertaken at optimum times to support these communities and reduce bushfire risk.

Ecological burning activates native plants, removing dead organic matter, promotes new growth and opportunities for plants to germinate and regenerate. It provides niches for insects to breed and feed, which has a cascading effect through the food chain, supporting larger animals as a result.

Council works with Malmsbury CFA, contractors and increasingly Traditional Owners to understand how fire can be used to Care for Country.

Ecological burns are generally conducted under very cool conditions, with minimum use of fuels or accelerants.
