Kyneton Showgrounds - Netball courts - August 2023

New netball and little athletics facilities have been funded for development following Council’s adoption of the Kyneton Showgrounds Master Plan in March 2023.

This also follows the Victorian Government pledging up to $1.5 million towards upgraded netball facilities in November 2022. Council has committed ~$1.3 million towards construction.

In line with master plan recommendations, proposed upgrades will include:

  • two new netball courts with court lighting and supporting infrastructure, female-friendly change rooms with home and away team amenities, umpires room, first aid room, administration and storage space as well as an undercover player and spectator area to be developed at the site of the existing netball court.
  • relocation of the little athletics facilities from the top oval to the bottom oval, including the development of permanent athletics facilities such as long jump pits, throwing cages and a larger storage facility.

Netball facilities

  • During the development of the master plan, numerous options for the location of netball facilities on the site were considered and the most suitable location was identified. Detailed design of new netball facilities is being developed in consultation with clubs and user groups, as well as state sporting associations.
  • The preferred option includes the necessary removal of the ten identified trees, with the new netball courts being designed to accommodate the existing trees that are identified to remain.

  • Council does not take tree removal decisions lightly and considered an independent arborist’s report(PDF, 6MB) that identified ten mature trees around the existing netball court as being in various stages of declining tree health, vigour, and life expectancy. The master plan also ensures additional tree plantings on the site.
  • Construction of the new netball facilities is planned to commence at the completion of the 2024 football/netball season.
  • Council provided an update on initial works - including Little Athletics relocation and selected tree removal - on 17 July 2024.

Little Athletics facilities

Works to relocate the Little Athletics facilities away from the current site near the netball court to a dedicated space near the bottom oval are now complete. The new facilities include a customised storage shed, discus cage and circle, shot put circles, and two long jump/triple jump run-ups and pits.
