Gisborne, Fisher & Aitken streets - Pedestrian safety improvement

The Victorian Government is investing $23 million as part of the Safe System Pedestrian Infrastructure Program (SSIP), to improve safety at popular activity areas for pedestrians and other vulnerable road users. These upgrades are being delivered by Council in partnership with the Victorian Government as we continue to work  to deliver safer, connected journeys in Victoria.

Pedestrians are completely exposed to the full force of a collision, making them one of our most vulnerable road users. Infrastructure plays a vital role in preventing serious crashes, while also helping to reduce the severity of crashes when they’re unavoidable.

Pedestrian safety is proposed to be improved – particularly for nearby school students – by installing a wombat crossing and completing other associated works at the intersection of Fisher Street and Aitken Street in Gisborne.

The installation of wombat crossing commenced on 02 December, 2024 and is expected to be completed by 20 December, 2024, Weather permitting. Lighting upgrades will be carried out after the wombat crossing installation is completed.

All works are expected to be completed by the end of May 2025.
