Macedon, Honour Avenue – Tree removal and replacement works

Following community feedback and an independent arborist report on the condition of trees along Honour Avenue in Macedon, Council is undertaking necessary tree removal and replacement works in late September 2024.

Honour Avenue is one of a number of Avenues of Honour registered on the Victorian Heritage Register for its historical and aesthetic significance to Victoria. Council has worked with Heritage Victoria to obtain necessary advice and permits required to undertake these works.

During the initial tree tagging process in early September 2024, a large split in the trunk of one of the Honour Avenue trees was identified through loud cracking noises and visual movement of the stem, resulting in the tree’s urgent removal due to the safety risk posed.

Upcoming permitted works will include:

  • the removal of six existing Pin Oak trees identified as being in poor condition, through the independent arborist report and further visual inspections
  • replacement of these trees and the additional tree removed earlier (seven trees in total to be planted), using the same tree species sourced from a local nursery
  • removal of all reflectors from tree trunks.

All works will be supervised by a suitably qualified arborist, and the establishing trees will be maintained and watered for two years post-planting. Residents adjacent to the removal and replanting sites have been notified of the planned works.
