Riddells Creek - Road and Pedestrian Safety Improvement Works

A suite of significant works to improve road and pedestrian safety will be completed in the Riddells Creek town centre, as part of Council’s 2024-25 Capital Works Program and aligning with the Riddells Creek Movement Network Plan.

These important works – targeting an area with significant pedestrian activity generated from the retail precinct and the train station – are funded through a combination of the Transport Accident Commission’s (TAC) Local Government Grant Program, the Victorian Government’s Safe System Pedestrian Infrastructure Program and Council.

The works will involve:

  • the installation of two (2) raised safety platforms – otherwise known as wombat crossings – along Station Street and Sutherlands Road, providing safer pedestrian crossing points between Lions Park, the retail precinct and the southern side of Station Street
  • the installation of an additional raised safety platform across the road at the Station Street and Hamilton Road intersection
  • extension of the footpath on the southern side of Hamilton Street, from the new wombat crossing mentioned above to the existing bus stop outside Riddells Creek Station
  • new line marking and signage, including near the Sutherlands Road and Station Road intersection to reverse the current give way arrangements, with vehicles on Sutherlands Road to have right of way and vehicles on Station Street needing to give way.

The project is expected to start in the week commencing Monday 28 October 2024 and is estimated to take four weeks to complete, weather permitting. The wombat crossing closest to the train station will be delivered first.

Local access for businesses and residents within the works zone will be maintained at all times, however there will be localised road closures and detours in place for a maximum of three days when the raised platforms are asphalted, and all traffic including buses will be detoured through surrounding streets. Council officers, in consultation with the Department of Transport and Planning, have informed the bus operator of the impending works.

We thank you for your understanding and patience as we complete these important road and pedestrian safety important works.
