Building permit application process
Before you begin any construction works, contact our Building Department on (03) 5422 0333 to find out if a building permit is required and if there are any other restrictions applicable. You can also visit our Gisborne office and speak to a member of the team in-person, please make an appointment prior. Ensure the building permit contains all the information necessary for the application to be determined by following the below guidance notes.
Assessments and timeframes
Due to resourcing factors, Council is currently taking 4-5 months to assess and decide building permit applications.
If this timeframe is not suitable for your project, you may wish to consider using a private building surveyor. The building permit and surveying industry was privatised in 1993, which means that Private Building Surveyors who work independently of Council may issue a building permit within Victoria; owner/occupiers do not have to use the Council’s service to obtain a building permit.
