Managing closed landfills
Council is responsible for the management of three closed landfills in the shire. They're located in Bullengarook, Kyneton, and Lancefield and are managed as per the Environmental Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) Act 2017.
All three sites have their own Environmental Management Plan and Aftercare Management Plan which are separately audited and verified through an EPA-approved auditor, and later endorsed by the EPA.
Lancefield and Kyneton are equipped with an automated solar leachate monitoring and pumping systems to maintain the compliant leachate levels within the landfill cells.
The landfill cap at Bullengarook is a biodiversity asset, having over 76 native plant species, grown naturally after the landfill closure. These native plants will be used as a seed bank for native revegetation around the shire.
Council has been made aware of legacy unofficial ‘tips’ around the shire, consistent with the Council’s rural setting such as the Macedon Ranges. Council is monitoring these sites as information becomes available, as required under the General Environmental Duty of the Act. These sites are of a very minor scale and pose no risk to the environment or the community.
