Home Upgrades for Climate Resilience

Next date: Thursday, 20 March 2025 | 06:30 PM to 07:30 PM

Extreme weather events across Australia in the last 20 years have highlighted the importance of homes to people’s ability to recover from those events. It’s possible to make an “ordinary” house more comfortable with a range of DIY and expert interventions which are within reach of many householders.

Join Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group Sustainable Homes' Action Group Leader Sue Barker and Castlemaine Institute's Lisa Merkesteyn, and Council staff for this informative two-part session that aims to equip you with the knowledge and practical steps to make sure your home continues to provide you shelter through a Climate Emergency.

Information Session - Thursday 20 March (Gisborne Library)

This session will introduce the Home Upgrades for Climate Resilience Workbook produced by Castlemaine Institute to help households upgrade their homes to survive extreme weather events - heatwaves, storms, floods and bushfire.

Participants will learn how to assess the risks relevant to their properties and how to use the booklet to understand what preparation and upgrades will improve the likelihood of their homes’ survival.

What to expect

  • Expert introduction and guidance on how to use the Home Upgrades for Climate Resilience Workbook
  • A free copy of the workbook to help assess your home’s strengths and vulnerabilities
  • Insights into common home vulnerabilities
  • Regional climate forecasts and disaster risks
  • Introduction to Sustainable Home Kits - free to borrow from all Goldfields Libraries.

Open Home Session - Friday 21 March (Newham)

Learn from the locals! After the information sessions, join this Open Home session in Newham where the hosts will share practical insights and personal experiences on upgrades they have made to their home, using the Home Upgrades for Climate Resilience workbook, to increase the homes resilience and comfort.
