Macedon
Macedon is a small commuter town with a distinctly rural character, surrounded by native bush, mountain and rural valley views.
This quiet village sits at the base of Mount Macedon’s southern slopes, approximately 60 km north-west of Melbourne, just off the Calder freeway.
The town is set in gently sloping, heavily treed terrain and its streets are lined with established exotic and native trees. It is made up of smaller residential lots than the township of Mt Macedon.
History
During the gold rush this tiny town provided inns, beer houses, blacksmith services and stores to travellers heading to and from the goldfields.
In February 1983, the Ash Wednesday fires swept through the area, destroying many houses.
The present day
Today the Macedon town centre is complete with all the services you would expect of a country village—a bakery, hotel, newsagent and post office. Macedon has a primary school, kindergarten, Tony Clarke Recreation Reserve and a railway station on the Melbourne-Bendigo line.
